“Tansen” is a poem by Hazrat Inayat Khan that tells a tale or incident that took place in Tansen’s life. Tansen was singer in Akbar’s court who one day sang the Deepak Raag (song of fire), after which his body started to burst into flame.

To save him from the fire another a maiden rose from her seat and sang the Malhar (song of cold water).

Akbar wanted to meet Tansen’s teacher who resided on the Himalayas.

After they found him, the king requested for a song and was spell bound by the melodious voice.

Once Akbar and Tansen came back to the place, the king wanted to hear the same song from Tansen which his teacher had sung.

Akbar however, was dissatisfied with him, to which Tansen replied that his teacher sings for the Gods, whereas he does for a king. There lies the difference.
