Solitude. Her most popular poem, Ella Wheeler Wilcox's “Solitude” is about the relationship between the individual and the outside world. The poem is built on a series of contrasting conditions: “Laugh, and the world laughs with you;/Weep and you weep alone.”

The poem 'SOLITUDE' is written by Ella Wheeler Wilcox. 'Life is a mixture of both joy and sorrow' is the central idea of the poem.

In the present-day world people are interested only in sharing happiness and joy of others. They don't like to share our sorrows. Even the earth is indifferent to human suffering. There will be nobody to comfort us during our unhappy hours.

When we are rejoicing men will search for us but when we are crying, they will turn and go. If we are glad, we have many friends, but when we are sad, we lose them all. No one will say 'no' to our drinks but the bitter experiences of life are to be faced by us alone. The poem establishes the idea that this is essentially a pleasure-seeking world.

When we feast our halls will be full. But if we are fast all will desert us. Success alone can motivate us to live. Sharing the joy of success can promote harmony. The poem throws light on the need to be self-reliant. Being self-reliant helps us to overcome the problems of life and gives us confidence to face the challenges of life. The world abides with us only when we are happy. Nobody will be there to share our sorrows. Every human being must undergo pain as part of life.
