The story ‘The Imp and the Crust’ tells us how the savage side of mankind can be awakened, by a little bit of wealth and fame.

An imp is not happy that the poor farmer leads an honest life, in spite of the imp’s efforts at angering him. So, disguised as a pilgrim, the imp prompts him to change his farming methods and produce corn. Soon the farmer becomes rich. Next it advises the farmer to distil the extra corn from his fields to vodka, which the farmer does immediately. He invites his friends for a drink and soon they are drunk and rolling in the mud, showing their bad side. The imp is happy now.

‘The Imp and the Crust’ is a story by the Russian writer, Leo Tolstoy (1828 – 1910).

The title should be “Money can make a man sin” because the Imp who is a devil’s ally vows that he would sin a peasant.

Now in return, the Imp gave this poor man vices and taught him how to make alcohol.

The farmer had a party, drank the liquor, lost his powers. The Imp successfully managed to make the peasant sin.
