1) The nature of revolt prior to 1857 was undirected that is it was mostly localised in smaller area,leaderless,no popular support etc.It was suppressed easily by the Britishers. The revolt of 1857 changed the nature of resistance as it was great blow to the British raj with power and dierection to some extent.

2) The war of 1857 was hailed as the first war of independence because the revolt of 1857 was a result of discontent which was prevailing inside every Indian for colonialism. The East India Company ruled India for about 200 years but it was for the first time that when someone revolted against the British in 1857.
