Raja Raja Chola I had this temple constructed in 1010 AD. The Brihadeeswara Temple was built for royal ceremonies and to display the emperor's power and vision. The Cholas had a splendid eye for art and architecture, which shows in their temples, which have been constructed in a Dravadian style.

2) It is edified by using granite .
3) There is a big statue of Nandi carved out of a single Rock measuring about 16 feet long and 13 feet high at the entrance .
