Most of the ionic compounds are soluble in water. As we know, like dissolves like. Also water has the highest dielectric constant. So it has the ability to weaken the bond between ionic compounds. After the bonds are broken, the H+ of water surrounds the anionic part of ionic compound and OH- I'd water surrounds the cationic part, and as a whole dissolving the ionic compound in water.
