Are distance and displacement equal in magnitude?

if a body travels in straight line without changing it's direction then,
    distance = magnitude of displacement
   
but when direction will change ,then distance is not equal to magnitude of displacement.
because at most time when direction is changing then ratio of distance/magnitude of diplacement is more then 1.
