Some of the main characteristics of Tropical Rain forests also known as Equatorial rain forests will give an idea about why it is considered impenetrable.

The trees are very tall (35 m-40 m) and they have a very dense and thick canopyThe result is that the canopy blocks most of the sunlight falling on them depriving the plants under them of sunlight. The trees in these forest are evergreen, i.e they retain their leaves round the year, which means sunlight is blocked throughout the year. The forest floor receives only 2% of the sunlight. The forest floor is relatively clear of vegetation because of the low sunlight penetration. (Vegetation is found mostly near riverbanks and swamps).

This is the reason why tropical rain forest is considered to be impenetrable to sunlight.
