Hey There!

So, Before I answer the question Let me tell in brief what are Fossil Fuels?

Fossil fuels are those fuels which are formed by the dead remains of flora and fauna.

Fossil fuels are basically Coal, Petroleum and Natural gas.

Fossil fuels take a lot of time to get replenished.

Coming to your question!

Question: Are fossil fuels found everywhere?

Here goes the answer to your question:

Firstly Let me give you a Direct Answer,

=> No, Fossil Fuels are not found everywhere.

Fossil Fuels are termed as exhaustible resources.

Exhaustible resources are those resources which can be exhausted through Human activities and are not likely to get replenished quickly.

Now, Lets take an example of an inexhaustible resource Sunlight.

We get sunlight in a large quantity and also it can't be exhausted through our activities, That is the reason it is an inexhaustible resource whereas Fossil fuels are exhaustible.

=> Fossil fuels are not found everywhere. That is because of the unequal distribution of minerals on the Earth.

=> Minerals are unequally distributed because the terrain, the climate and the altitude differs so much.

=> Fossil fuels are Minerals and hence they are distributed unequally.

Lets get cleared what actually are these fossil fuels individually.

Coal - Coal is a black, thick hard substance used in cooking, Generation of electricity, Steam engines etc. There are some by-products of coal namely coal tar, coke and coal gas.

Petroleum - Petroleum is a Dark liquid with an unpleasant smell. It is mainly used as a Transport fuel. However its by-products such as Petrol, Diesel,Kerosene, Lubricants, Paraffin wax, Bitumen etc. Let me explain the uses of 3 By-products of petroleum.

Paraffin wax: Used for lubrication and Vaseline

Bitumen: Used in Paints and surfacing roads in-place of coal tar.

Kerosene: Used as Fuel in air crafts and for lighting stove lamps.

Natural Gas: Natural Gas is a cleaner fuel which is not a polluting fuel like diesel and petroleum and can be used in place of them. It is also a source of energy.

  • The main fossil fuels we use today were formed from land and marine plants/animals. When buried plants are oxidized partly by chemicals reactions under pressure and hot conditions, such fossil fuels form. However, it takes millions of years.
  • Oil and gas are found mainly along geologically young tectonic belts at plate boundaries (Botkin and Keller, 2003). The origin of oil and gas are marine animals (e.g. mussels).
  • Partially decomposed green plants, when buried under sediments for a long time, slowly transform into coal. There are many coal types, e.g. lignite, hard coal, subbituminous coal, etc. It is almost everwhere througout the planet.
