The greenhouse effect is the process by which radiation from a planet's atmosphere warms the planet's surface to a temperature above what it would be without its atmosphere. Greenhouse gases- methane, CO2, CFCs etc.    Greenhouse gases are responsible for trapping the heat of sun rays in the earth's atmosphere.  More gases means more heat will be trapped.  So, it will give a rise in the global temperature  Rise in the global temperature will result in melting of polar ice caps and ultimately result in global warming.
