The Hungry Boy

An orphan boy lived with an elderly monk in a village temple.

Every morning, the boy went to the village to collect food from the villagers.

Whatever food he bought back, the kind monk shared cqually with the boy.

On New Year's day, the boy got sixteen dumplings.

So many dumplings!' the boy said, licking his lips. Let me see how many I'll get."

He sat down and made two equal piles of dumplings. There were eight in each!

The monk always gives me half, so I'll eat the share that's mine.' They boy gobbled up eight dumplings one after the other. He packed the remaining dumplings in a piece of paper and walked towards the temple.

The dumplings were delicious and he couldn't stop thinking about them. T'll eat a few more, he thought. He took out four dumplings and ate them as he walked.

He walked a little farther but his mind was still on dumplings. Tll cat half of what is lefl, he

said to himself.

He opened the paper wrapping and quickly swallowed two dumplings. Having rarely had such good food, he couldn't stop himself from eating another one. Now there was only one dumpling left for the monk.

When the boy reached the temple, the monk was surprised to see a single dumpling. 'Is this all

that you got today?" he asked

No, the villagers gave me sixteen dumplings, the boy replied honestly.

I was hungry, so I ate fifteen of them, the boy said.

Is there no limit to your greed!" the monk cried, How can you possibly eat so many dumplings?

Like this,' said the boy, stuffing the last one into his mouth.
