Since Mg2+ cation has a higher charge and smaller radius than Na+ cation, it has a higher charge density and greater polarising power. This results in the Cl electron cloud in MgCl2 being distorted to a greater extent.J

NaCl and MgCl do not show isomorphism.
- When two or more compounds have similar chemical composition and crystalline structures, they are said to be isomorphic to one another.
- The ratio of the atoms of isomorphic compounds are same, which implies that they have the same empirical formula. However, they possess different physical properties such as mass, density and reactivity.
- Two substances are said to be isomorphic if they follow the following criteria: similar formula, same number of atoms, similar size of atoms, similar nature of bonding.
- NaCl and MgCl are not isomorphic compounds because although they have similar molecular formulae and same atomic ratio, they have different crystalline structures.
