An output device is an piece of computer hardware which receives data from a computer and then translates the same data into another form. That form may be audio, visual, textual, hard copy such as a printed document.

The key distinction between input device and output device is that an input device sends data to computer, whereas an output device receives data from computer.

For example, a microphone is used  to record a podcast is an example of using an input device. Listening to the recorded podcast through the connected speaker is a good example of using an output device. Both output and input devices are the examples of auxiliary or peripheral devices.
