Are oxidation reactions exothermic or endothermic? Give reasons for your choice.

(Please don't ignore reaction of nitrogen and oxygen to form nitrogen monoxide)

ANSWER

Oxidation reaction is that in which addition of oxygen and removal of hydrogen takes place.eg.C+O2------>CO2 + heat.This reaction is exothermic becoz. in this reaction there is evolution of heat .It is also oxidation reaction becoz. there is addition of oxygen in carbon.

Now,

N2 + O2 + heat -------->2NO

This is endothermic becoz. here heat is absorbed.

So,now we observe than oxidation reaction will either be exothermic or endothermic.

Oxidation reactions are both endo-and exothermic depending upon the reaction conditions. Consider the following equations. As you can see from these reactions that Heat is released in the reaction so it is an exothermic reaction. I2(s) + Cl2(g) -----------> 2 ICl (g)delta H = + 17.8 kJ/moldelta G = -5.5 kJ/molThis oxidation reaction is spontaneous, but endothermic.
