Siddhartha was the Indian prince. He detached his earthly possessions and attachments to find a way to end the cycle of birth, old age, sickness, and death. When he detached from his desires and attachments, and meditated in deep investigation of the nature of all this existence, without distractions of earthly diversions, his single-mindedness led to his enlightenment. Upon enlightenment, he was called a "buddha". He was then recognized as "Shakyamuni Buddha"
"Shakya" was the name of Siddhartha's clan and bloodline. "Muni" means 'sage'. So he was recognized as a great sage identified from the Shakya clan. Hence, he was called Shakyamuni Buddha.
