Due to their high levels of activity, Hyla squirella tadpoles are vulnerable to predation by multiple species of fish, and the adults are vulnerable to predation by the non-native Cuban tree frog. The Cuban tree frog is known to eat smaller native frogs including the squirrel tree frog.
