The opening found on older stems are is called lenticels, which usually act as respiratory pores for the incoming and outgoing of gases.

The overall shape of the lenticels is used to determine the type of plant as well.

A lenticel is a porous tissue made up of cells with large intercellular spaces in peri-derm of the bark of woody stems and roots of dicotyledonous flower plants.
