The pigment which conforms the colour of skin is melanin pigment.
And it is not a protein.
But it is always bound to a protein.

Melanin is the main pigment responsible for the various pigmentations found in animal and human skin, hair, and eyes. Thus, L-tyrosine should be considered the main monophenol precursor of melanin although not the only one. Eumelanin provides primarily dark colors, from brown to black.
