The ecological pyramid is always upright because the distribution of energy and biomass is always reducing as the trophic level becomes higher (from primary producer to tertiary consumer). ... As the amount of energy decreases at each trophic level, the pyramid of energy is always upright.

Yes, ecological pyramids or the pyramids of energy are always upright.

  • All pyramids of energy are upright. This is because at each trophic level, some amount of energy is always wasted in the form of heat.
  • The producer has the most amount of energy.
  • The prey (consumer) which feeds on the producer gains all the energy from producer however, some of it is wasted when it performs day to day activities.
  • The predator consumes lesser amount of energy from the prey (compared to the amount of energy the prey gets from the producer) and the prey looses energy when it moves too.
  • For example in the food chain of a plant, hare and fox:
  1. Plant (producer) has the most level of energy hence the base of it's pyramid of energy will be large.
  2. Hare (consumer) has lesser energy than plant as it uses some amount of energy to move. The section of the pyramid for consumer will be smaller than that for the producer.
  3. The fox (predator) already gets less amount of energy and so the upper most section of the pyramid is smallest.
