Earlier the moon had some volcanoes on its surface. The moon is smaller than the earth in its size. For many years now, scientists have held their strong belief that the moon appears dark from the earth's surface due to the presence of volcanoes on the moon filled in craters ....After moon was first formed, it was initially in a molten state though, later it rapidly cooled down. But scientists feel that the Moon's interior remained quite hot enough to produce magma......The Earth's Moon no longer possesses the large volcanoes like Hawaii or Mount St. Helens. However, vast plains of basaltic lavas still cover much of the lunar surface.

Volcanoes on the Moon May Have Erupted During the Dinosaur Age. Called Maskelyne, this feature is one of many newly discovered young volcanic rock deposits on the moon. These deposits are known as irregular mare patches and they are thought to be remnants of small basaltic eruptions.
Much of the Moon's ancient surface is covered with hardened lava.
Back in 1971, Apollo 15 astronauts orbiting the Moon photographed something very odd. Researchers called it "Ina," and it looked like the aftermath of a volcanic eruption.
