Khadi is a handspun fabric which is all spun mainly made out of cotton into yarn on a spinning wheel called a charkha and then hand-woven cloth later mechanized.
The cloth is usually woven from natural fibres mainly cotton and may also include silk, or wool etc. Khadi word relates to Mahatma Gandhi swadeshi movement and boycott of foreign goods.
‘The spinning wheel represents to me the hope of the masses. The masses lost their freedom, such as it was, with the loss of the Charkha. The Charkha supplemented the agriculture of the villagers and gave it dignity.’
Khadi is still popular in India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. By khadi end number of products can be produced for example sari, kurta pajama, shirts, trousers, bed sheets, table cloths etc.
