Uses of Interhalogen Compounds

● These are utilized as non-watery solvents.

● They are utilized as a catalyst in couple of reactions.

● UF6 which is used in the enrichment of 235 U is produced by using ClF3 and BrF3.

U (s) + 3ClF3 (l) → UF6 (g) + 3ClF (g)

● These are utilized as fluorinating compounds.

Hey !!

USES OF INTERHALOGEN COMPOUNDS

  • Interhalogen compounds are used as non-aqueous solvents.
  • Interhalogen compounds of fluorine are very useful fluorinating agents.
  • Example :- ClF₃ and BrF₃ are useful in making gaseous UF₆ which is useful in making enriched U²³⁵ fuel.
  • Further, they are useful in separating the fission products from spent fuel rods. Pu and most of the fission products form non-volatile tetrafluorides like PuF₄ while U forms volatile UF₆.
  • 3 ClF₃ + U ----> UF₆ + 3 CIF ; 4 ClF₃ + 3 Pu ----> 3 PuF₄ + 2 Cl₂

GOOD LUCK !!
