I am afraid of the dark because I come from a long line of people who survived to pass on their genes. Some of those people hailed from an African savanna crawling with predators who were fond of tasty tasty hominid whenever they could get it. Those predators were most active at night. Folks who were not afraid of the dark got et, leaving their more timid comrades, the ones predisposed to feel anxious when the lights went out, to breed.
