Hello Mortals

The correct ans is :-

Are you deaf? I asked how old you ( are).

Because here the present term is " are".

When the asker asked about age, at that time let the age be x. And again when asker asked about age, then also the age must be x.

It can't be asked that what was your age 5 mins ago or something like that.

So, we will take the present value and so answer will be " are".

raviranjantraders196: Wrong ! Plus, you have not provided any explanation.
MVishnu: i provided explanation
ASHTRIXofficial: it is right... am
ASHTRIXofficial: are*
raviprakashsmspdqhys: Hi, When we are talking about past, we usually use past tenses even for things which are still true and happening in current. So, WERE is the correct answer.
ASHTRIXofficial: nope.... you can't say what were your age, for some near past like as within 12 months.... you can use past when you use timeline in question
raviprakashsmspdqhys: I have proof ! But there's no way to send attachment in comments.

WERE is correct.

Notice the differences :
#1- Are you deaf? I asked how old ARE you ?
#2- Are you deaf? I asked how old you WERE.

In #1, he REPEATED (asked him again) the question he had asked and so a interrogative structure is followed. But in #2, he REMINDED him the question he had asked. Since, when talking about PAST, we usually use PAST even for things which are still true, WERE will be the correct choice ONLY.
