Answer:

a) A parasitic relationship is one in which one organism, the parasite, lives off of another organism, the host, harming it and possibly causing death. The parasite lives on or in the body of the host. A few examples of parasites are tapeworms, fleas, and barnacles.

b) The symbiotic relationship between lichens and algae seems like a mutualism (a relationship in which both organisms benefit). The fungus can obtain photosynthates from the algae or cyanobacterium and the algae or cyanobacterium can grow in a drier environment than it could otherwise tolerate.

c) Because they do not photosynthesize, fungi rely on organic sources of energy; they are heterotrophic. They are the primary decomposers (or saprotrophs) in many ecosystems. Most saprotrophic fungi grow as a branching network of hyphae.
