We know that area of a square is side².

Then length of one side of the square is √16

i.e 4cm

Let ABCD be the square and AC be the diagonal.

Now in right triangle ADC right angled at D,

we get, by Pythagoras theorem

AC²=AD²+DC²

or AC²=4²+4²

or AC²=32

or AC=√32

or AC=4√2

Therefore the length of the diagonal is 4√2cm.

Hope this will help you.
