Assume area of square is 100.

a^2 = 100
So, a=10
96% increase means area of square is 196.

a^2=196
a=14

So side will increase by 40%

Suppose, the length of the square =x m
then area =x²metre square
after increasing the area of the square ,
the area = x²×196/100 =1.96x²
now increase the area =1.96x²-x²=0.96x²
0.96x²/100=96
or, x²=96×100/0.96
or, x=√100×100
x=100
