EXPLANATION:- 1. The Sundarbans have a combined land and water area of around 3,860 square miles (10,000 square km), with about three-fifths of that area located in Bangladesh.
2. Sundarbans, in southern Bangladesh and northeastern India, were named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997.
3. The two main causes of the permanent loss of land to water in the Sundarbans, according to researchers, are increased wave action brought on by storminess (natural) and a reduction in sediments brought on by upstream dams (human-induced).
4. According to a recent study, the ecologically vulnerable region of India and Bangladesh's Sundarbans has lost 24.55 percent of its mangroves (136.77 square km) due to erosion over the past three decades. This news comes as officials assess the harm cyclone Amphan caused to the mangroves there.
5. Mangrove forests are threatened by unchecked coastal development, the disappearance of deltas, and extreme weather related to climate change. Mangrove forests serve as nature's disaster buffer. Mangroves' declining health impairs their capacity for resilience and recovery against the effects of climate change, such as sea-level rise.
