The area of a triangle ∆ABC is equal to ½ × BD × AC = ½ × 5 × 8 = 20. The triangle area is also equal to (AE × BC) / 2. If DABC above is isosceles and AB = BC, then altitude BD bisects the base; that is, AD = DC = 4.
