Argentinian teenager has battled though extreme temperatures to become the youngest person to reach the South Pole after a gruelling 700 mile journey. Tomás Diaz, 16, from Mendoza, spent almost 50 days on ice, skiing for an average of eight hours a day and battling temperatures as low as -50°C (-58°F) with winds of 120mph. His father, Franco Diaz, said Tomás had set off on the final day of the trek "really motivated to make it-but it was -50°C, the coldest day so far, with really ferocious winds". The conditions were so bad that Tomás's final leg of the trek to the South Pole took a few hours longer than expected.) But on Saturday night, Tomás was celebrating his achievement by eating his first real meal in nearly seven weeks choripán! He called his parents and told them he had reached his goal, and was now enjoying the luxury of a heated tent. He told us, "I'm really happy, but mostly relieved that for the first time in 48 days I don't have to get up tomorrow and drag my sled for nine hours in the snow and icy wind. Today was realy hard, as the closer I got to the Pole, the slower I went. My legs had had enough. Tomás is two years younger than the current world record holder, Canadian Sarah McNair-Landry, who completed the trek in 2005. Once back in Argentina, Tomás will recommence his studies as normal at school. His next challenge will be his examinations!
