Argha is a 14 years old girl born in a poor family of 6 members.

She is the eldest of the 4 children of her parents. Finding it difficult

to feed a family of six, Argha’s father has arranged Argha’s

marriage with a boy in a nearby village. Argha however does not

want to get married at such an young age. She goes to the village

headman and requests him to save her from the problem. The

village headman knows the financial condition of Argha’s parents

and at the same time he knows that 14 years is too young age to

get married.

(a) What should the headman do to solve Argha’s problem ?

(b) What do the young couples learn from Argha’s story ?

Answer:

When parents are blood relatives, there is a higher risk of disease and birth defects, stillbirths, infant mortality and a shorter life expectancy. To have a child with severe diseases and disorders may cause heavy strain for the family in question.
