The key here is training: we can’t speak the animal’s language, and they can’t speak ours, but we can teach them that certain behaviors are associated with certain sounds and certain rewards/punishments.

For instance, a dog doesn’t understand “Sit” the way we do (as in, they don’t know that it’s a verb), but they know that if we make that sound, and they react a certain way (in this case, sitting), we will react positively (“good boy!”/treat/petting). Likewise, if they chew on something and we react negatively, they will avoid this behavior in order to avoid our negative response (such as yelling or hitting them… which in my opinion shouldn’t be done, but it’s how training used to work).

Animals and humans both instinctively look for positive stimuli and reject negative stimuli.

I think that if we could speak to them, we would have a whole issue of “but why should I do that?” in our hands.
