Arild was a soldier from Denmark. During a war with Sweden he was caught and imprisoned.
He loved a girl called Thale in his village. He wanted to marry her. Arild was very sad. So he
wrote a letter to the king of Sweden. In his letter, he wrote that he will set up a farm and will
return as soon as he had harvested the first crop in his fields. The king agreed to his request
and sent Arild home. Arild went back to Denmark and married Thale. But he remembered the
promise. He had to go back to Sweden as soon as he had harvested the crop. He thought for a
long time. He went out into the forest and came back with six seeds that he planted in his
fields. At the end of the year the king of Sweden sent a messenger to check why had not Arild
come back. Arild told the messenger that he had not harvested the crop yet. The messenger
asked him what plant had he planted. Arild took him to the farm and showed the tiny plants
that were just beginning to sprout. He had planted six pine trees. When the king of Sweden
heard about this he laughed and said that jail was not a place for a man like him.
