Aristotle developed the 'first classification system' in which he divided all the known organisms into two main groups. They are Plants and Animals. Then he divided them into smaller groups. He classified them on the ''basis of traits".

Animals were classified based on the presence or absence of 'red blood cells' (RBC). But this classification fails to classify all types of organisms.
