The original classification of living organisms was developed by the ancient Greek philosopher and scientist Aristotle. It is the basis of the modern classification.
Aristotle's classification system had two categories; Matter (Non Living) & form and matter (Living). He categorized the organisms based on the environment they lived, their movement and structural similarities.
Invention of microscope and the discovery of microorganisms required further classification. And the other scientists like Haeckel, Whittaker worked on the classification system and we have the modern classification system which helps to identify each and every organism and makes the study of wide variety of organisms convenient and easy.
