Answer:

A starts from X towards Y at 10 a.m. B starts from Y towards X at 11 a.m. If they reach their destinations at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively, at what time will they meet?

Let us assume that the distance between X and Y is x km.

It took A, 4 hours to complete journey from X towards Y and 6 hours for B to do the same from Y towards X.

So A is moving with a speed of x/4 kmph and B with x/6 kmph.

Here A will cover one-fourth of the distance from X to Y in one hour and B will cover one-fifth of the distance from Y to X in one hour.

That means by 11 a.m. A will cover x/4 km. So now within 3x/4 km they are going to meet each other. (as x-x/4 is the remaining distance A has to cover from 11 a.m. which is the starting time of B too)

From 11 a.m. A and B are going to spend sa

Let the distance between x and y is d. km.

Time taken by A in reaching from x to y = 10a.m. to 2p.m = 4 hrs.

Thus, speed of A = d/4.km/hr.

Time taken by B in reaching from y to x = 11 a.m to 5 p.m = 6 hrs.

Speed of B = d/6.km/hr.

Let they meet after t hours from 10 a.m. , accordingly :-

Distance covered by A in t hours. + distal covered by B in (t-1) hours = d.

(d/4)×t + (d/6)×(t-1) = d.

or, t/4+(t-1)/6= 1.

or, (5t-2)/12 = 1.

or, 5t - 2 = 12.

or, t = 14/5 hrs. Or 2 hours 48 minutes.

They will meet after 2 hrs 48 minutes from 10 a.m. i'e 12 : 48 p.m. Answer 8 pm
