Heavy tanks have broad chains called caterpillar tanks which considerably increase the area of contact .The tracks help the tanks to distribute its wieght more evenly over a larger surface area than wheels can .This prevents it from sinking in areas where wheeled vehicles of the same weight would sink .

because they have a steel type ramp of instead of tyres. so they cannot stuck in marshy land etc..
