The given triangle is ΔABC whose sides are AB = 9 ft, BC = 8 ft and CA = 9 ft. AD = x ft is the height of the tent and is perpendicular bisector of BC.
Thus BD = CD = 4 ft
Since ΔABD is a right-angled triangle, we use the Pythagoras theorem to determine AD,
AD² + BD² = AB²
or, x² + 4² = 9²
or, x² = 9² - 4²
or, x² = 81 - 16
or, x² = 65
or, x = 8.06 , since x cannot be negative
Therefore x = 8.1 ft
