Given:

✰ Length of the garden = 10 m

✰ Breadth of the garden = 5 m

✰ Around a rectangular garden of length, a road of 1 m is laid.

To find:

✠ The cost of metalling the road at Rs. 200 per metre square.

Solution:

Let's understand the concept first! We will find the area of garden as we are already provided with the length and breadth of the garden, then we will find the extended length and extended breadth to find the total area of land. After that we will substract the area of garden from the total area of land to get area of road. By using area of road, we will find the cost of metalling the road at Rs. 200 per metre square.

Let's find out...♪

Area = length × breadth

➛ Length of the garden = 10 m

➛ Breadth of the garden = 5 m

➛ Area of garden = 10 × 5

➛ Area of garden = 50 m²

Now,

➛ Extended length = 10 + 2 × 1 [ As around a rectangular garden of length, a road of 1 m is laid, as the road is laid on both the sides of rectangular garden, so we will multiply it by 2 or add it twice.

➛ Extended length = 10 + 2

➛ Extended length = 12 m

➛ Extended breadth = 5 + 2 × 1

➛ Extended breadth = 5 + 2

➛ Extended breadth = 7 m

⟹ Total area of land = 12 × 7

⟹ Total area of land = 84 m²

Area of road = Total area of land - Area of garden

⟹ Area of road = ( 84 - 50 ) m²

⟹ Area of road = 34 m²

➤ Cost of metalling 1 m² of road = Rs. 200

➤ Cost of metalling 34 m² of road = Rs. 200 × 34

➤ Cost of metalling 34 m² of road = Rs. 6800

The cost of metalling the road = Rs. 6,800
