1. The Estates-General, convened by Louis XVI to deal with France's financial crisis, assembled on May 5, 1789. On June 17, with the failure of efforts to reconcile the three estates, the Third Estate declared themselves redefined as the National Assembly, an assembly not of the estates but of the people.

2. In the history of France, the First Republic, officially the French Republic, was founded on 21 September 1792 during the French Revolution. The First Republic lasted until the declaration of the First Empire on 18 May 1804 under Napoleon, although the form of the government changed several times.

3. The National Constituent Assembly, acting on the night of 4 August 1789, announced, The National Assembly abolishes the feudal system entirely. It 8abolished both the seigneurial rights of the Second Estate (the nobility) and the tithes gathered by the First Estate (the Catholic clergy).

4. On 3 September 1791, the National Constituent Assembly forced king Louis XVI to accept the French Constitution of 1791, thus turning the absolute monarchy into a constitutional monarchy.

5. By issuing the Declaration of Independence, adopted by the Continental Congress on July 41776, the 13 American colonies severed their political connections to Great Britain. While perhaps true, Franklin also hoped to convince the French to supply the colonists with aid.
