nelting points in ascending order Nacl <MgCl2 <AlCl2
this is because sodium and magnesium have low melting point while other elements have high melting point but these are exceptional. and aluminium have high melting point than sodium and magnesium.

Ascending order of melting point is (1)AlCl3 < (2)MgCl2 < (3)NaCl

  • The melting point is higher for ionic solids than for covalent sold because the bond formed by ionic solids is greater than the bond formed by covalent solids.
  • Covalent character is determined by the Fajans rule.
  • covalent character is directly proportional to the charge and size of the anion but inversely proportional to the size of the cation.
  • In AlCl3, +3 charge is maximum so, more covalent character and less melting point than MgCl2 and NaCl.
