Oxidation number is the total number of electrons gained or lost by an atom in order to form a bond with another atom.

The oxidation number is zero for atoms that contains only one element. For iodine molecule, { I }_{ 2 } the oxidation number is zero

Hydrogen is +1 oxidation state

For HI = -1

For HI{ O }_{ 4 } = +7

For ICl = +1

The trend of increase in oxidation number for the given elements is { I }_{ 2 } < HI < ICl < HI{ O }_{ 4 }.
