A strange man arrived in Wiping in early February one wintery day, through a bitting wind and a driving snow, the last snowfall of the year, over the down , walking from Brambelhurst railway station . He was carrying a black little portmanteau in his thickly gloved hands . His face was fully wrapped with bandage so that he could hide his full face.He was wrapped up from head to foot , and the brim of his soft felt hat which hid every inch of his face leaving his shiny tipped nose. The snow has piled itself against his shoulder and chest , and added a white crest to the burden he was carrying . He staggered into the coach horses more dead than alive, and put his portmanteau down . He cried for a fire and a room in the name of human charity.
