What is Ailing Indian Sports?
Many ills ail Indian sports. If it were not so, Indian sports contingent in Olympics would not win just one or two medals! It is the harsh reality that Indian Sports performance in international events is very low as compared to other nations. In 2016 Olympics India won only two medals: 1 silver; I bronze.
After all what ails the Indian sports. There are many reasons behind this poor performance in sports.
Poor Sports Policy: The Government’s sports policy at Center and State levels don’t encourage sports. Owing to corruption the funds released by the Government are misused. The sports infra-structure provided at schools is very poor. As a result children don’t get exposure to sports.
Poor Sports Infra Structure: Our country people appear to be inordinately enthusiastic and passionate about cricket. The entire focus of all sponsors, creating facilities, and infrastructure is towards cricket primarily.
As a result other sports are neglected; hence, India has not achieved much in the field of other sports. In football, athletics, gymnastics, badminton, lawn tennis, hockey, boxing, etc., our players have not been able to achieve much. If similar attention is paid to other sports, our players can do equally well in other sports also.
Recently, the Indian Government has started an initiative to improve sports standard. Khelo India programme has been started; under this programme the Government will identify talented players at various levels by the High-Powered Committee and will provide annual financial assistance of ₹ 5 lakh per annum for 8 years.
Let’s hope the sports standard will improve in the coming years.
