Plants make their own food by carbon dioxide, with water from the soil. This process is called photosynthesis. To power the process, the plant uses the energy of sunlight. A green pigment in the leaves called chlorophyll traps the Sun's energy.
If they don't get sunlight they can't make food and hence the plant won't survive.
