The counting of votes took place on 23 May, and on the same day the results were declared.[1][2][3][4] About 900 million people were eligible to vote and turnout was over 67 per cent – the highest ever as well as the highest participation by women voters.
The Bharatiya Janata Party won 303 seats, further increasing its substantial majority[8] and the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance won 353 seats.[9] The Indian National Congress party won 52 seats, and the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance won 91. Other parties and their alliances won 98 seats.[10] Indian National Congress again failed to secure the requisite 10% of the seats (55 seats) in the Lok Sabha and yet again India remains without an official opposition party.[11][12]
