In India, begging is one of the most pressing problems and it has assumed a shape of profession. This is an ancient practice in the country and it has lived on and on in the country since the time immemorial. India contains the largest number of beggars in the world. According to statistical records, there are 4,13,670 beggars-2.2 lakh males and 1.91 lakh females in the country. Their number is increasing day by day. It is pretty hard to classify them because they belong to all sects. Several types of them are seen moving from one place to another. Among them, some of homeless, some are crippled and disabled, while some others are quite hale and hearty. They may be seen in every town, around the railway stations, bus stands, religious places, dharamshalas, on the bathing ghats, in fairs and at every turn or turn or crossing in India. It is because of this that foreigners call India a land of beggars. They cry for help, for alms, for a handful of flour or a few paisas. They try their best the emotions and sentiments of the people and force them directly or indirectly to give them some money. Some lazy people who do not like to earn their livelihood by doing manual and mental labor become beggars. So these beggars have become a major hurdle in the path of progress of the nation.
