It seems as if the question is more along the lines of what students can do to be active agents of environmental awareness.  I think that the effect students have on the dwindling natural resources is negligent in comparison to the companies and economic forces that use them as plateaus towards economic growth.  In my mind the question is more driven towards how can students become participants in helping to reverse or mitigate this trend.  One particular way this can be done is to help gear scientific education towards an environmental ethic of care for the ecological balance of the planet.  This might involve teaching units on ecosystems and biomes with a practical disposition or discussing with students how waste, in any form, endangers the planet.  This could be where a discussion or application of conservation would be evident.  In the final analysis, students have to be exposed to not only why it is important to practice ecological balance but how they have power to reverse this.  In the process, education is seen as teaching students that power, in all of its forms, has to come from the "bottom up," starting with the notion of collective solidarity and social cohesion over a particular cause of change.
