The repeated news about farmers’ suicides is hurting the conscience of the country. Everyone feel sad about this and wonder as to how to prevent this extremely disturbing happening.
While the politicians quarrel among themselves as to who is responsible for this vexed issue and try to score political point over each other, certainly there are firm views among cross section of Indians on the subject.200,000 farmers have ended their lives since 1997.
Farmers' suicides are the most tragic and dramatic symptom of the crisis of survival faced by Indian peasants.
some of the problems faced by farmers are:
• Problems in maintaining farm livestock owing to increasing costs
• Problems in getting credit at good terms and conditions because of reluctance of commercial banks
• Lack of proper irrigation
• Absence of mechanisation
• Insufficient transport facilities
• They need to be educated about various facets of farming
• Centres of excellence need to be set up to help them
• Agricultural universities need to discover new science-based practices and technologies
• Insurance is needed
• They need to be given better access to credit and at better terms and conditions
• Landholdings should be consolidated
• Organic manure should be used
• Mechanisation is needed
• Markets should be regulated
