article on god can only judge me
Answers
We have all heard someone say, “Only God can judge me”. Most people think it’s Biblical and some even give an enthusiastic, “Amen!” when they hear it. However, this phrase is unbiblical and the person saying this phrase is running away from accountability from their Christian community, which is also unbiblical.
Why is this phrase unbiblical?
It surprise you to discover the Bible actually teaches Christians are commanded to judge fellow Christians, but not unbelievers (1 Cor. 5:12,13). Obviously, this judgment is intended to be conveyed through a loving, non-hypocritical, and humble rebuke.
Being a Christian involves accountability to God and to fellow Christians. This accountability is meant to help the Christian grow in their walk with Jesus. Sometimes, I can be living in a sin and I might not even know that it’s as bad as it is. Therefore, I need a brother or sister in Christ to lovingly tell me that I’m doing something wrong. After being corrected, I can finally correct the habit and get my relationship with Jesus where it needs to be. This judging must also be done in love (Ephesians 4:15).
Jesus never said that Christians should never judge, but instead He said, “Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment” (John 7:24). Jesus actually commands us to judge! Christians are meant to judge, but we’re meant to judge in the correct way (i.e. with love). We need to always build each other up and correcting each other is a way to help build one another up.
Saying “Only God can judge me” means you don’t want accountability, yet Christianity is all about accountability from both God and man.
People who say this unbiblical phrase often want all the comfort of being a Christian (i.e. Jesus loves me or Jesus died for my sin), while not wanting any of the conviction of being a Christian (i.e. you need to work at ridding sin from your life or you need accountability from your Christian family). They want others to be never tell me that they’re doing something wrong. This can’t happen though.
